Philosophical Journal Vol. 33, Analytical Philosophy – history, problems, relations with the other philosophical discourses, perspectives‏

“Analytical Philosophy –
history, problems, relations with the other philosophical discourses,
perspectives”

“Filozofija”
Philosophical Journal Vol. 33, No. 4/2011

The Journal invites
contributions in Macedonian or in Serbian, Croatian, English, German, French,
Russian and Italian. The accepted articles will be published originally or
bilingually. Short CV's of the authors should be submitted in
English.

ABOUT US:

The Journal was founded
in 2001 and since then there were published more than 400 articles from
numerous authors from the country and the region. "Filozofija"
publishes any kind of relevant philosophical articles and
translations of wide spectrum of the philosophical disciplines, such
as history of philosophy, metaphysic, epistemology and logic, ethics,
anthropology, philosophy of politics, aesthetics, philosophy of
mythology... It releases thematic issues four times a year. The Journal
cooperates with the Institute of Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy - Skopje and
the Philosophical Society of Macedonia.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Analytical philosophy is
one of the dominant movements in the XX century, especially in the Anglo-Saxon
speaking cultures. We say “movement” because it is hard to give satisfying
definition for its nature. But today we can say that the analytical philosophy,
as a style of philosophising, remains one of the main characteristic of the
Western philosophy. This modus of the philosophical discourse is often seen as opposition
of the continental philosophy. The discussions about the relationship between
analytical and continental philosophy started to occupy the academic circles in
the second half of the XX century and still continue. But in the passed few decades,
despite their differences, there are certain tendencies of their conversion which
indicates that drawing rigid line between them is unfounded. This leaves space
for possible shift in the philosophical discourse in the Western European philosophy
as a result of their mutual influence. Starting from these points, the Editorial
Board of the Philosophical Journal “Filozofija” decided its December’s edition
to dedicate to this topic.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

The articles should
contain: the full name of the author, the title of the article in capital
letters, information about the academic status and the institution (if
applicable) and summary (200-300 words) in English, German, French, Russian or
Italian. The summary should contain the same data as the article (the full name
of the author, the title of the article in capital letters, information about
the academic status and the institution).
Deadline for submission
of the papers: November 1, 2011.
The materials should be
submitted to: filozofija.spisanie@gmail.com

The politics of fear and the rise of far-right extremism in Europe, Re-public‏

Online journal Re-public  invites contributions
for its upcoming special issue entitled The politics of fear and the rise
of far-right extremism in Europe. The influence of the far-right is surging
cross Europe in multiple forms. Mainstream far right political parties have
recently participated in government coalitions. Right wing extremism is
becoming explosive, ranging from violent attacks against migrants and ethnic
minorities to the recent mass killings in Norway. Far right political
parties and groups are increasingly setting the political agenda on the
European management of migration flows. Although the rise of far right
movements in Europe has received widespread attention and has triggered a
variety of responses from liberal, social democratic and left political
forces, these seem to have been relatively ineffective.

One of the main analytical and activist deficiencies of the struggles
against the far-right in Europe is that they have failed to fully tackle its
janus-like constitution. The far right in Europe has managed to blend racist
(based on the notion of the hierarchy of biological races) with neo-racist
(focusing on the insurmountability of cultural differences) beliefs, to
frame the question of migration as one of the principal threats to European
democracies, and it has managed to place itself both as a legitimate actor
in the democratic public sphere and concurrently as one of its main critics.
The aim of the special issue will be to explore the dynamics of the
contemporary European far-right and to critically assess the anti-racist
practices devised to address its influence.

Submissions may address some of the following themes:

- the divergent ideologies of European far-right movements;
- the organization of far right movements, political parties and groups,
focusing on transnational and international linkages;
- the ambiguous relationship of the far-right to the concept of democracy
and democratic institutions;
- the role of new and old media in the spread of far right
- a critical analysis of anti-racist strategies and practices

Essays should be approximately 1.500 words long.

Please send your contributions in electronic format to:

e-mail: editors@re-public.gr

Deadline for submissions: *30 October 2011*

(The Western Balkans and the prospects of the neighbourhood policy - lessons learned from the Arab spring)

The past two decades have been years of political and economic turmoil for the neighbouring countries of the EU27, from its immediate neighbourhood in the Western Balkans to its partners in the Mediterranean union. Nowadays, faced with diverse challenges like: the EU integration process, economic crisis, protests, fights against dictatorship regimes, and sustainable development, the countries of the EU’s neighbourhood have different agendas when it comes to their relations with the Union.

What has been achieved so far; how will the new EEAS cope with the demanding events that unfold; where will the acceptance of new members stop; what will the Arab spring bring to the table in the future relations " are only few of the issues which concern the decision-makers in the EU and its neighbours.. Drawing from the experience of different countries, we encourage research papers that will set ground-breaking research and recommendations for the future of the relations between the EU and its neighbours in the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, North Africa and the Middle East.

Whilst our aim is to represent a wide spectrum of disciplines and approaches, we strongly encourage comparative and multi-disciplinary perspectives, and welcome proposals using new research methodologies. We invite submission of original research papers including but not limited to the following themes:

· The future of the Western Balkans integration in the EU
· Turkey and the EU, is there a way to get the integration back in game?
· Can the EU transfer the lessons learned from the Balkans to the South Caucasus?
· Mediterranean Union " failed idea or successful project?
· The EEAS and the EU Future Enlargement
· Prospects for new relations between the new Arab democracies and the EU
· The future of the neighbourhood policy

We strongly encourage cross-cultural, cross-national and multi-disciplinary perspectives, with entries on new research methodologies welcomed.

Hate and Political Discourse, Journal of Hate Studies‏

CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: March 15, 2012
"Hate and Political Discourse"
Journal of Hate Studies
Volume X, No. 1 (2012/13)
Guest Editor: Robert L. Tsai, J.D., Professor of Law, American University,
Washington College of Law

About the Theme

Often shielded by constitutional rules and nurtured by political
discourse, hate has a mercurial existence in the popular imagination. In
the "arena of angry minds," as Richard Hofstadter called American
political life, political actors sometimes choose to condemn hatred,
distance themselves from it, appeal to its existence, or foment it.

Even when subjugation, discrimination, or violence is not the goal, the
politics of hate can pay off. Rather than seeking its total eradication,
many democracies assume the permanence of hate and seek to minimize its
excesses or to punish and prohibit specific expressions. Are such
assumptions well-founded, and such strategies wise? Some of the social
groups marked through the techniques of hatred have changed over time, as
the political dividends for resorting to strategies of hate have shifted,
while other groups seem to be consistent targets of hate.

Technological advances offer new tools to combat hatemongering even as
they can make demagogues more effective. What are the structural
conditions that allow hate to thrive or might permit its isolation? How
might inroads be made in the law or politics of inclusion, especially in
countries with strong commitments to rhetorical freedom and popular
sovereignty?

Call for Submissions

The Journal of Hate Studies welcomes original papers treating the theme,
"Hate and Political Discourse," from a wide range of disciplines,
including history, law, philosophy, political science, sociology, criminal
justice, social psychology, economics, anthropology, geography,
journalism, communications, rhetoric, literature, educational studies, and
cultural studies.

We especially encourage original treatments of the following topics:
• Hate and popular sovereignty
• How hate can foster alternative communities and movements
• Cultural foundations of hate
• Historical changes in rhetorical strategies
• Political parties and hate
• Necessary political conditions for hate
• Empirical approaches to the problem of hate
• The role of hate in nation-building
• How literature, rhetoric, journalism or other forms of communication can
fuel or discourage hate
• Geographical differences in how hatred is sustained or combated
• Comparative approaches and cross-cultural challenges
• New technologies in combating or fomenting hatred in the realm of
political discourse

We anticipate hosting an invitational Symposium in Fall 2012, either at
American University or Gonzaga University, in conjunction with the
publication of this Volume. Authors published in this Volume would be
invited to present their work at the Symposium.

About the Journal

The Journal of Hate Studies is a peer-reviewed publication of the Gonzaga
University Institute for Hate Studies. The Journal of Hate Studies is an
international scholarly journal promoting the sharing of interdisciplinary
ideas and research relating to the study of what hate is, where it comes
from, and how to combat it. It presents cutting-edge essays, theory, and
research that deepen the understanding of the development and expression
of hate.

Dynamics of Success in Post-Communism. Codes, Behaviors, Possession, Exposure [DL: July 15 2011]‏

The Romanian Peasant Museum is seeking
contributions for its annual review Martor. The Martor review is an
unconventional academic journal established in 1996, with a focus on
cultural and visual anthropology, ethnology and museology. Some of its earlier
issues can be read here: http://martor.memoria.ro/?location=archive&action=details&id=6

The theme of Martor 16/2011 issue is Dynamics of Success in Post-Communism.
Codes, Behaviors, Possession, Exposure. We are looking to gather state of
the art anthropological research on achieving and displaying social, economical
and symbolic success in communist and post-communist societies. Among the
questions this issue is seeking to address are: What did it mean to “succeed”
in socialist countries? How did success behavior and communication change after
1989? What is the impact of increased mobility and migration on identity
redefinition? How are these behaviors of exposure and seduction (Baudrillard 1970, 1979) subject to domestication (Goody 1977) or translation (Clifford 1999, 2010)
according to the local codes
of success? What is the social logic that sustains and articulates these
behaviours of possession, exposure and self-communication?

We are theoretically proposing a concept of
success that is essentially relational. Constructed with reference to the
other, it is a permanent affirmation and communication of one’s social,
economic and symbolic status (Bourdieu 1972, 1979). For a better analysis of the concept and codes
of success we are proposing a wider vocabulary: succes (réussite) and its antonyms, failure and shame ; prestige,
honour, status; success displays such
as houses, cars, new technology (cell phones), music (manele), gestures, odours; the effects of mobility and migration on
local codes of success, and so on. These proposals are meant to incite
reflection; they are neither exclusive nor exhaustive.

We are expecting texts, in either English or
French, of 35.000 to 50.000 characters (with spaces) by July 15th, 2011. High quality images supporting the
argument are a plus in the selection process.

Please e-mail your submissions and any
inquiries (e.g. editorial guidelines) to Simina Badica (siminarb@gmail.com) and Daniela Moisa (dalimoisa@yahoo.com).

A history of the Balkans in general is an inseparable part of Ottoman history. The common history of the Ottoman Balkans is documented and preserved in millions of written records presently kept in the Ottoman archives in Turkey and in various Balkan countries.2012 will be the 100th year of where the Ottoman rule ended in the Balkans. In order to commemorate this, ADAM has decided to prepare a volume of its journal with the focus on “The Balkans: Past, Present and Future Prospects.” In this volume, various empirical and academic topics and
contributions are expected to take place from all over the world. ADAM is highly appreciated to invite academics and practitioners of various fields to contribute to this volume.“The Balkans: Past, Present and Future Prospects” focus project’s important dates:30 September 2011Titles & Short Abstracts30 December 2011Submission of Full Papers30 April 2012End of Reviewing by Editor(s)15 June 2012Publishing the ProjectFor further information and suggestion:email: idrizmesut@yahoo.com /mesut.idriz@gazikent.edu.tr

Call for abstracts Cosmopolitanism and Philosophy in a Cosmopolitan Sense International Colloquium

21-22 October, 2011
The New Europe College
- Institute for Advanced Study -
Bucharest, Romania
Organizers: Tamara CĂRĂUȘ, Dan LAZEA, Camil Alexandru PÂRVU,
Áron TELEGDI-CSETRI
As an emerging field, cosmopolitanism has drawn much attention in recent years from a wide range of disciplines, located within the humanities, the social and political sciences, and beyond. However, this seems to be, in some respects, merely a late revival of an old – both ancient and modern – idea that has been overshadowed by the intermezzo of nationalism. All along this revival of thought, we may notice the recurrence of references to the Kantian philosophical tradition, highlighted by authors like Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas or John Rawls. The thematic range of this new cosmopolitanism – signaled by such topics as global justice, transnationalism, world civil society or global publics – seems in its turn to be intimately related with the Kantian core of this tradition. In this light, the special role attributed to philosophy by this thread of modernity becomes important once more: in a globally public use of reason, the dialogue beyond any local universalism is shaped by philosophy. Namely, philosophy – understood cosmopolitically, qua the free public use of reason, as against mere doctrine, or school philosophy – is the habitus that prepares the terrain for any rational debate, and hence, for any reflected cosmopolitan attitude.
We invite scholars from a variety of fields concerned with cosmopolitanism; we expect an exchange of ideas within and between both contemporary cosmopolitanism and the cosmopolitan tradition.
Colleagues interested in participating are kindly asked to send us a brief proposal (title and an abstract of about 300 words, please use rtf or pdf) describing the nature of their contribution, before the 15th of July, 2011.
Selected participants will be requested to submit the full paper of their presentation (2000-4000 words, please use rtf) until the 30th of September, 2011; the papers will be published in the conference proceedings volume.
The proposals should be sent to the initiators of this event, to the address: atelegdi@nec.ro and/or telegdi_a@yahoo.com .
Participation is free of charge.

Social Media in Post-Communist Europe, Acta Universitatis Sapientiae, Social Analysis‏

The forthcoming, 2/2011 issue of the Acta Universitatis Sapientiae,
Social Analysis seeks to investigate the many facets, challenges and
risks social media can play in the making and remaking of today’s society. We
are especially interested in empirical studies and theoretically well-grounded essays which analyze the rising of network society in post-socialist
contexts.

Common wisdom assesses that this part of the world constitutes a laggard
in terms of Internet penetration and access to digital devices. Meanwhile,
Internet, social media, web 2, etc. represent an emerging social reality in
these countries as well. We wish to look beyond the common sense and to seek
answers to the following main questions:

How social media are received and used in these countries in order to
link different levels and strata of the social? How and to what degree the
Internet can contribute to the dissolution of social inequalities or, on the
contrary, are we legitimated to talk about new, specific, Internet-mediated
inequalities in this part of the world?

How the Internet and social media are used, misused and abused in
specific areas of the social (e.g. education, research, health-care, business,
leadership, etc.)? How and to what degree the Internet in general and social
media in particular can contribute to social and political campaigns and
mobilizations?

Manuscripts centered on the above or connected topics should be about
5,000-7,000 words and should arrive to the Editorial Board of the Acta Universitatis Sapientiae, Social
Analysis no later than July 31, 2011.

In order to submit your
manuscript, please use the electronic address of the journal:
