Investor and philanthropist George Soros established the Open Society Foundations, starting in 1984, to help countries make the transition from communism.  Our activities have grown to encompass the United States and more than 70 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.  Each foundation relies on the expertise of boards composed of eminent citizens who determine individual agendas based on local priorities.  
The International Advocacy Director’s office, based in Hammersmith, London, provides strategic support and coordination to Open Society Foundations advocacy initiatives at the international and regional level. Currently a team of 6 full time staff including the director, there is a need for a graduate-level intern to support the team’s work internally and externally.
The Open Soceity Foundations are offering a 3-5 day/week internship for the duration of 5 to 6 months starting in July 2011.  The successful candidate will be working at the OSF-London office in Hammersmith, London, and will work under the supervision of the senior advocacy officer for South Asia and Middle East issues.
The internship:
  • is an opportunity for a young graduate to gain work experience and increase their understanding of open society issues (such as human rights, justice, democracy, good governance, etc);
  • gives the intern an insight into the work of the Open Society Foundations and their advocacy work in particular;
  • provides exposure to research, programmatic and administrative responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • prepare relevant presentations, briefing notes, meeting reports and other factual and analytical documents, sometimes at short notice
  • assist with desk research on a range of regional and thematic topics, including South Asia, the Middle East, migration and minority rights
  • managing and expanding contacts databases for UK and Brussels based networks
  • attend internal and external events on request and prepare minutes on request
  • assist with logistical and administrative tasks
  • perform other related duties at the request of team members as required, often under remote management

Qualifications

  • minimum undergraduate degree in the field of international affairs or politics
  • proven ability to search, synthesise information and produce succinct, accurate written briefs
  • previous experience within a charity environment, human rights related experience and knowledge about the regions/countries in the Open Society Foundations’ remit are desirable
  • computer literate, with a good knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office package
  • fluent spoken and written English required; Arabic language skills would be desirable
  • self motivation, a responsible work ethic, meticulous attention to detail and a high degree of professionalism

Program Associate - Paid Internship EuroNGOs Brussels, Belgium

The EuroNGOs is offering a supervised 6-months paid internship at its Secretariat in Brussels, starting on 1 July 2011.
Key responsibilities and functions:
The intern will assist EuroNGOs senior staff in the following areas:
Communication
-Draft and disseminate the EuroNGOs monthly newsletter and daily news
-Maintain and update the EuroNGOs website
Research
-Undertake research and draft reports and other written material in support of the EuroNGOs ongoing advocacy projects on SRHR in development cooperation
Administrative work
-Provide administrative and logistical support in the preparatory and implementing phases of EuroNGOs capacity-building workshops; Steering Committee meetings, EuroNGOs Task Forces meetings; and the 2011 International Conference and Annual General Meeting to be held in Warsaw, Poland.
-Take minutes of meetings, prepare reports and executive summaries, proofreading and lay out of documents.
Project management
-Support the EuroNGOs Secretariat in drafting funding proposals, draft interim and final reports and prepare project management tools as requested
Miscellaneous
-Attend conferences and meeting on global health, SRHR and development in Brussels, take minutes and report back to the EuroNGOs Coordinator.
-Participate in the EuroNGOs International Conference and Annual General Meeting in Warsaw, taking minutes and draft the conference report.
Qualifications:
-University degree (B.A.) in a relevant field (development, social sciences). M.A. will be a strong asset.
-1-2 years professional experience. Previous work in the NGO sector will be an asset.
-Knowledge of development cooperation policies. Knowledge of EU policies will be an asset.
-General knowledge of and interest in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) issues (you must be pro-choice on abortion).
-Advanced research and analytical skills.
-Excellent writing and editing skills.
-Excellent verbal and written command of English, preferable mother tongue.
-Computer literacy.
The post is full-time and compensated with € 700,-/month. The intern reports to the EuroNGOs Coordinator. The successful candidates will be responsible for providing his or her own accommodation and living expenses.

Tasks:
Assist in the research of relevant technical information for the different task forces especially on climate change, green economy, energy, water, and sustainable consumption and production
Assist in drafting various texts and power point presentations, as well as in developing brochures and background papers
Support the organization of diverse meetings and side events
Support the Commission’s work through the review of technical materials and projects
Support strategies to communicate commission work effectively, i.e. update website, draft newsletter for members
Support the organization of and provide assistance during ICC Commission and task force meetings
Education & skills:
Masters in sustainable development management, risk management, MBA, public administration, international relations, business administration, or similar fields
Excellent research skills
Very good oral and written knowledge in English
Very good knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point; knowledge with Content Management Systems is an asset
Some substantive background in the environmental field would be a plus
Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
Eligibility criteria:
The Applicant MUST:
Be currently enrolled in a third or fourth year of under-graduate (BA/BSc.) or in a graduate (Masters) or post-graduate (PhD) programme, and will continue to be enrolled during the period of the internship.
Be willing to intern on a full-time basis spending five days a week for a period of six months.

Communications Intern – Summer/Fall 2011

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is looking for a motivated Communications Intern to aid its media relations team.
Responsibilities include:
Liaising with journalists around the globe to update and expand the Communications’ international media database;
Preparing for international events;
Media monitoring;
Basic computer skills, fluency in English and basic French are required.
Working times are flexible but the ideal candidate would be available to work at least three days per week. This is a paid position with a duration of 3-6 months.
Compensation includes a monthly stipend and “tickets restaurant”.

Intern for its Global Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) Programme, Brussels

Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 90 chapters worldwide, and an international Secretariat in Berlin, Germany (TI-S), TI raises awareness about the devastating impact of corruption and works with partners in government, the private sector and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.
TI’s chapters currently operate more than 60 Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres (ALACs) in more than 45 different countries. The centres provide legal advice and assistance to victims and witnesses of corruption, helping citizens pursue corruption-related complaints and encouraging them to come forward. By using information gained from cases (either individual cases or common themes running through a variety of cases), the centres are then able to advocate for systemic reform based on concrete evidence.
The centres have proven to be effective in empowering people in the fight against corruption. Their advocacy campaigns also create a virtuous circle, helping establish the profile and reputation of the centre, which in turn, encourages more citizens to join in the struggle and resist corruption.
Description of Internship
Main function: Researching, drafting and supporting the publication of human interest and success stories, case studies and global communications materials for ALACs.
Starting Date: 4 July 2011
Duration: six months, full time Monday to Friday (40 hrs week)
Location: Berlin, Germany
Remuneration: 400, Euro per month
Key responsibilities:
Draft “Human Interest Stories”, based on the cases managed by the legal advice centres
Work closely with TI’s communications department in the editing and publication process.
Contribute to the production of ALAC communications and fundraising materials
Assist with ALAC data collection and management at the global level
Assist in administration, research, documentation, record-keeping, and logistical tasks related to supporting TI ALACs globally
Contribute to content development for TI online products (website, blog, Google maps, etc) section on ALACs
Contribute to the content development of the TI Intranet section on ALACs
Knowledge, experience and skills:
Journalistic/writing background, with a strong interest in gathering facts and reporting on stories, with high intercultural awareness and sensitivity
Experience writing about complex, politically and legally sensitive subjects for non-expert audiences is useful
Excellent written and spoken English required.
Knowledge of French, Arabic, Spanish or Russian is an asset.
Previous international experience is an asset
Familiarity with the work of non-profit advocacy organisations is an asset.
Strong user skills with standard computer applications such as MS Excel, Word, Outlook and Access required.
Legal requirements for the paid internship:
Kindly note that a valid work permit for Germany is required and that interns must take out their own health insurance before starting the internship.

Internship at International Center for the Legal Protection of Human Rights

INTERIGHTS is pleased to invite applications for a six month funded internship starting in May 2011, for a lawyer/academic to work on a strategic litigation project addressing torture and/or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment within healthcare settings in Central and Eastern Europe and Sub Saharan Africa.
Established in 1982, INTERIGHTS is a charity that works to promote respect for human rights through the use of law. We achieve this through a range of activities: strategic litigation through co-representation, legal support to applicants and third party interventions before international, regional, and national human rights courts and bodies; advising lawyers on the use of international and comparative human rights law before their domestic courts; building capacity through litigation partnerships, targeted training activities and internships, and through the dissemination of legal information. Thematically, our priorities are equality, security and the rule of law (including counter-terrorism), and economic and social rights (ESR). INTERIGHTS currently focuses its activities in Africa, the Commonwealth, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia.
Activities will include:
• Legal research on relevant international and comparative human rights law and practice aimed at providing advice and the filing of legal briefs domestically and internationally;
• Sourcing of potential cases through research and the maintenance of regular communication with partners
• Preparation of materials for workshops;
• Research for a dedicated issue of INTERIGHTS Bulletin on the subject
• Where possible, attendance at meetings with human rights practitioners, lectures, or visits to other international / national human rights organisations based in London.
The six-month internship will begin in May 2011 and will be based in London.  The intern will receive a monthly stipend of £1,200.  Accommodation is not provided but INTERIGHTS can advise on finding a suitable place to stay.

The Chair in Law and the Human Genome is preparing a proposal for the lot 2 of a tender  coming from the DG HOME of the European Union (see file attached), which is directly related to CBRN issues and Penal Laws. 

As you will see, we are highly experienced in taking part in EU founded Research Projects. Last year, we completed a study on the question of bioterrorism, biosafety and biosecurity for the DF JLS of the European Union. http://www.scholarshipandphd.blogspot.com/


According to the objectives of this tender, we are building a network of experts belonging not only to all the MS of the EU, but also to the countries quoted in the tender, who will collaborate with us in the development of these studies. We are looking for representatives of Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldava, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania.

If our proposal were the winner one, the representatives would have to report (about 10 pages) about the situation of this topic in their country, trough the methodology exposed in the tender (that is, not only developing a theoretical study on the legal situation, but also making one or two interviews with practitioners). They should also build a database of about 20 practitioners (lawyers, judges, public prosecutors, etc). We would pay a fee of about 500-600 euro for their efforces, apart from a certificate of being involved in this study.

Milieu Ltd is a growing consulting firm based in Brussels with a record of excellence in international and European policy and law – primarily with respect to environmental protection but also in such fields as fundamental rights, public health, consumer protection and health and safety. We provide our expertise mainly for European institutions and other public sector clients.

Stagiaire/intern: public health

A small, dynamic consulting company that carries out legal and policy studies for European institutions and other public sector clients is looking for an intern (stagiaire) to assist our work on public health and related policy topics. 

A Masters degree or strong course work in public health is required; experience in managing quantitative data and preparing tables and graphs; and strong spoken and written English and experience drafting reports in English. Good knowledge of other European languages is a plus. Knowledge of European health policy and European institutions is also a plus.

A successful candidate should be well-organised, have strong computer skills, including Word and Excel, and able to prioritise a busy and varied workload.

The position is based in Brussels and is paid. We would like to have someone in place from early April 2011.

Full time and working in the FoEE office in Brussels
Position to start ideally on the 26th of April 2011. Based in Brussels, full time, for 6 months.

This is a unique opportunity to join and learn within the communications team of a green NGO working at a European level in Brussels. If you can demonstrate an interest in environmental issues, the ability and willingness to learn fast, we can in return offer you the chance to learn and contribute to the support of FoEE campaigns on issues including climate change, corporate accountability, food and biodiversity.

The position we are offering consists of:

Communications
External communications & website support:
  • Draft copy for the website and publications, articles, press releases, stories for internal publications and other materials as requested
  • Edit and proofread materials including reports, funding applications, briefings, articles, press releases, letters, and copy for the website
  • Support the Communications team  in keeping the current FoEE website up-to-date and populated with relevant resources and materials
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of FoEE’s social media and web 2.0 presence
  • Contribute to the development of a new FoEE website, including communicating  with stakeholders and carrying out consultation
  • Contribute to creative brainstorming for campaign communications plans
  • Support the development of communications tools and materials for FoEE campaigns including videos, cyberactions, exhibitions, presentations
  • Help the Communications team respond promptly to incoming media enquiries
  • Follow up calls to journalists to sell-in events or stories
  • Help keep media contacts and distribution lists up to date through regular updates to the media database
  • Assist with ongoing monitoring of FoEE’s presence in the media
  • Undertake basic design work for use in publications and on the website
Internal Communications:
  • Contribute to keeping the current FoEE internal website up to date
  • Contribute to the development of a new FoEE internal website, including gathering and uploading content
  • Support keeping internal email lists up to date
  • Assist the Communications Team with the production and distribution of the quarterly FoEE internal electronic newsletter, including sourcing content and images, drafting stories, editing and proofreading, and doing design work
Support to Communications function
  • Stand in for Communications Officers when away
Events support
  • Support the Events Officer with the logistical preparations of events including media stunts, street actions, meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Contribute to creative brainstorming of ideas for media stunts and events
  • Participate in the design and ordering of events materials
Skills
  • Commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth
  • Educated to degree standard, at least 6 months relevant work experience
  • Native speaker standard of English
  • Able to demonstrate a clear aptitude for learning
  • Attention to detail
  • A natural communicator
  • Strong and proficient writing skills
  • Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage (especially French)
  • Experience of software like Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop an advantage
