The Institute for Security Studies is recruiting a research fellow (Grade A2/A3/A4 of the salary grid of the Coordinated Organisations ) as from 2 January 2012. Candidates should be nationals of one of the EU Member States.

1. Main tasks

The person selected will, under the Director's guidance, participate in the Institute's study and research projects, and other activities such as publications, organisation of seminars and participation in conferences. The Institute has, as its objective, to "contribute to the development of CFSP, including CSDP".

S/he will be required to:
prepare policy-oriented notes and analyses for the Council of the European Union and the High Representative;
undertake study and research projects on security and defence questions of interest to the EU, with a view to publication by the Institute or in specialised academic periodicals;
contribute to the conception and editing of the Institute's publications;
collaborate in the organisation of the Institute's seminars, task forces and meetings;
assist in running the Institute's various collective activities.


2. General qualifications
Higher degree (master's or doctorate), preferably in the field of political, economic or social sciences.
Confirmed professional experience, particularly as a researcher in a university or in a public or private centre for analysis doing work similar to that of the Institute.
Sound knowledge of the workings and policies of the European Union.
Excellent knowledge of the CFSP working languages.
Highly-developed sense of initiative and responsibility, and an ability to work well in a relatively small international team.


3. Specific qualifications

In addition to a general knowledge of international affairs and security issues, candidates will also be recruited on the basis of specialisation in one or several of the following fields:
Developments in CSDP
Links between CFSP/CSDP and other EU policies
The defence Industry
EU–NATO relations

The contract will be for a fixed term of three years, with the possibility of one extension (maximum two years).

Assist in the research of relevant technical information for the different task forces especially on climate change, green economy, energy, water, and sustainable consumption and production
Assist in drafting various texts and power point presentations, as well as in developing brochures and background papers
Support the organization of diverse meetings and side events
Support the Commission’s work through the review of technical materials and projects
Support strategies to communicate commission work effectively, i.e. update website, draft newsletter for members
Support the organization of and provide assistance during ICC Commission and task force meetings
Education & skills:
Masters in sustainable development management, risk management, MBA, public administration, international relations, business administration, or similar fields
Excellent research skills
Very good oral and written knowledge in English
Very good knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point; knowledge with Content Management Systems is an asset
Some substantive background in the environmental field would be a plus
Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
Eligibility criteria:
The Applicant MUST:
Be currently enrolled in a third or fourth year of under-graduate (BA/BSc.) or in a graduate (Masters) or post-graduate (PhD) programme, and will continue to be enrolled during the period of the internship.
Be willing to intern on a full-time basis spending five days a week for a period of six months.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is looking for a motivated Communications Intern to aid its media relations team.
Responsibilities include:
Liaising with journalists around the globe to update and expand the Communications’ international media database;
Preparing for international events;
Media monitoring;
Basic computer skills, fluency in English and basic French are required.
Working times are flexible but the ideal candidate would be available to work at least three days per week. This is a paid position with a duration of 3-6 months.
Compensation includes a monthly stipend and “tickets restaurant”.
This is a good opportunity for a student who wants to gain invaluable communications experience – and exposure – working in an international organization.

Fellowships at the European Institutes for Advanced Study, Paris. Deadline: May 2011

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar. The Institutes for Advanced Study support the focused, self-directed work of outstanding researchers. The fellows benefit from the finest intellectual and research conditions and from the stimulating environment of a multi-disciplinary and international community of first-rate scholars.
EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in life and exact sciences, provided that their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities and that it interfaces with humanities and social sciences. The diversity of the 14 participating IAS offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars. Applicants may select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions.
The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising young scholars as well as from leading senior researchers. Based on the 2011/2012 application campaign, the EURIAS selection process has proven to be highly competitive. To match the Programme standards, applicants have to submit a solid and innovative research proposal, to demonstrate the ability to forge beyond disciplinary specialisation, to show an international commitment as well as quality publications in high-impact venues.
For the 2012-2013 academic year, EURIAS offers 36 fellowships (19 junior and 17 senior positions).
All IAS have agreed on common standards, including the provision of a living allowance (in the range of € 26,000 for a junior fellow and € 38,000 for a senior fellow), accommodation (or a mobility allowance), a research budget, plus coverage of travel expenses.

Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference, Paris, 2-6 July 2012

We are pleased to announce that the 9th International Conference
Crossroads in Cultural Studies will be held in Paris, France, from July
2nd to 6th, 2012, hosted by Sorbonne Nouvelle University and UNESCO.
The city of Paris has a long and complex history as a crossroad between
cultures and peoples. Paris has played an important role in the
development and circulation of the works of authors and thinkers that
have shaped the postcolonial imagination in a significant way. Drawing
on their tradition of comprehensive and critical thought, the organizers
seek contributions in the form of papers and panels that will continue
to examine the intersection between culture, power and knowledge from
within the framework of Cultural Studies.
The conference will also be hosted by UNESCO, the international
organization that has always championed cultural diversity and
difference. Given the long association between Cultural Studies research
and UNESCO, this conference should be an occasion for Cultural Studies
to look back on its own evolution as well as explore new scholarly insights.
12 World-class Keynote Speakers from all over the world will
address the conference at keynote and plenary sessions. Among them,
Sarah Ahmed, Marie-Hélène Bourcier, Jeremy Gilbert, Achille Mbembe,
Walter Mignolo, Bobby Noble, Phaedra Pezzullo, Françoise Vergès. With
the participation of Stuart Hall and Jacques Rancière (to be confirmed).

ACS Assistance Scheme for Crossroads 2012. The Association for
Cultural Studies will offer a small number of grants to assist
participants from ACS under-represented regions with travel
accommodation or registration expenses.

accommodation will also be available close at hand at the International
Paris University Campus.
