International Summer School on Religion and Public Life, Negotiating Space in Diversity: Religions and Authorities, Yogyakarta and Bali, Indonesia, 3-17 July 2012

International Summer School on Religion and Public Life Negotiating Space in Diversity: Religions and Authorities, Yogyakarta and Bali, Indonesia July 3-17th 2012

The International Summer School on Religion and Public Life (ISSRPL) is a unique, global initiative providing an annual international, inter-religious summer school of approximately two weeks. Each year the school explores critical issues around religion and society that influence the nature of community. It combines pluralistic perspectives on religious thought with social scientific research on tolerance, civil society and an open, dialogic, and reflective approach to pedagogic practice.

Increasingly and throughout the world, societies are facing the challenge of renewed religious identities and the negotiation of such identity claims in the public sphere. In essence they are facing the challenge of how to acknowledge diverse identities while at the same time finding common ground for conversation, often, in a highly contested public space. Related issues include questions of (individual) freedom (of speech, of religion) and the need to maintain (communal) identity and inter-group harmony in such contested locales.

This year’s ISSRPL will explore these issues in the context of Indonesia, a Muslim majority country (with more Muslims than all the Arab countries combined) but also, historically, one of great religious diversity. Under the authoritarian New Order (1966-1998) diversity was acknowledged in Indonesia, but was strictly regulated. The transition to democracy in 1998 saw an opening of political space for the expression of multiple social interests based on ethnic, religious, and other identities, while at the same time weakening the authorities of the central government and the military. The combination of these two forces contributed to new trends (at least in some areas) such as more frequent conflicts between communities, the aspiration to implement shari’a at the local level supported by some secular political parties, and the phenomenon of “religious radicalization”. New barriers between diverse identity-based communities (as well as within such communities) arose, posing challenges for the creation of a civil, pluralist democracy.

Indonesia is not alone in witnessing the rise of identity politics. In many parts of the world, including in Europe and the US, the old 19th and 20th century political ideologies seem to be receding, as identity becomes the new determinant of politics and economy. Multiple and new actors, often divided and mobilized on the basis of their identity claims (including prominently, religious ones), compete in the common public sphere, asserting alternative visions of politics and society.

This year’s ISSRPL will be located in two very diverse places in Indonesia, Yogyakarta (which has a majority of Muslims but also a strong presence of other religions) and Bali (which is a Hindu majority area). Contrasting and comparing these different locales will allow participants to reflect on these issues based on the Indonesian experience as well as those of the participants from many different countries. The school’s host this year will be the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (www.icrs.ugm.ac.id) and Center for Religious and Cross Cultural Studies, Graduate School Gadjah Mada University (www.crcs.ugm.ac.id), Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The school’s goal is to transform both the theoretical models and concrete practices through which religious orientations and secular models of politics and society engage one another. Its guiding principle is that in order to build relations of tolerance and understanding between groups and to shape a civil society, the perceived barrier between secular, modern and more traditional religious values must be questioned. Political orientations and social practices must be developed that will draw on both religious traditions and the insights of secular modernity in new and creative ways. The program is centered on three different kinds of learning (formal, informal and experiential) together with intense processes of group building and the construction of working relationships across religious and ethnic identities. Commitment to all forms of learning and group work is expected of school participants. Thus, the didactic goals of the school are social as well as cognitive. It is expected that, as a result of attendance at the school, fellows develop and operationalize programs in their home countries.

In 2003 the ISSRPL met in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia to study The Role of Religion in the Conflicts of ex-Yugoslavia. In 2004 it met in Bosnia and Herzegovina to study The Muslim Question in Europe. In 2005 it met in Israel, focused on the problem of Religion, Nationalism, and Fundamentalism: The Challenge of Coexistence. In 2006 it met in both Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Boston, USA and was focused on Religion and Civil Society: A Comparative Perspective. In 2007 it met in Istanbul, Turkey to study comparative perspectives on State, Ethnos, Religion: The Legacy of Empire and the Nation-state. In 2008 the school met in Birmingham, England around the theme of The Good City: Living Together Differently. In 2009 it met again in Birmingham, one of two major English cities likely soon to have an “ethnic minority, majority”. We then explored these norms on the micro-scale of neighborhoods, and so that year’s title was The Language of Neighborhood and Practices of Public Life. In 2010 the school met in Nicosia, Cyprus and Jaffa, Israel and compared the dynamics of divided and mixed cities, in a program entitled Together and Apart: Divided Cities. In 2011 the school met in Sofia and Plovdiv Bulgaria focused on a study of A Mosaic of Margins: Ethnicity, Religion and Belonging.

We look forward to a small but select group of international fellows who may include, religious elites, NGO leaders, school teachers, major actors in the non-profit world and civil society, as well as political leaders, academics and members of the business communities of different countries. Fellows will be joined by an international faculty and so comprise a cohort from the Americas, the Balkans, Central and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Western Europe and elsewhere. The success of the school has always depended on the wide range of people, commitments and views presented. It is through the intense encounter with the truly different that we are forced to rethink our fundamental assessments and so break-through to new ways of knowing, thinking, feeling, and hence, acting.

The deadline for receiving applications is 11 March 2012, with application material found at http://www.issrpl.org/programs/application.html

War Crime Tribunals and Dealing with the Past – Justice crossing the Border, Summer School of the Graduate Centre Humanities and Social Sciences, University Leipzig, 19-22 September 2011‏

Summer School of the Graduate Centre Humanities and Social Sciences
University Leipzig
Research Academy Leipzig
19-22 September 2011
Panel:Crossing National Borders: People, Goods, Capital, and Ideas
War Crime Tribunals and Dealing with the Past – Justice crossing the Border?
The readiness to address atrocities committed in the past, as well as to work on culture of remembrance has been increasing during the last decades. International Tribunals are seen as one mechanism to trigger processes of dealing with the past. What is their role in this process? Are Tribunals appropriate legal tools to start debates about the past?
Although ambiguous, the legacy of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals has often been used as an argument that complex processes of dealing with past conflicts can be accelerated by War Crimes Trials. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has prosecuted and punished war criminals from all parties involved in this conflict, contributing to specific, transnational form of justice, more or less bitterly rejected by a new nation-states and their citizens. By challenging national concepts of justice and justifications of war, the ICTY offered a more complex, transnational approach to the justice in war.
PhD Students working on legal, historical, ethical or cultural aspects of War Crime Tribunals (Nuremberg, Tokyo, ICTY, etc) are invited to further elaborate upon the possibility of legal proceedings in contributing towards dealing with past process.

Summer School, Understanding International Criminal Law, Sibiu, Romania, 23-31 July 2011‏

The experience of the past century bitterly reminds us of the atrocities that took place in different parts of the world in a state of impunity from national authorities and international community. The brutal legacy of the last 100 years called for the need to establish a new field of law that would allow international bodies to exercise jurisdiction over individuals for a series of very grave crimes that "deeply shocked the conscience of humanity".

We warmly invite you to this summer school in order to study a field about which little is known, but represents an unprecedented milestone in the development of international law. In the course of the event, you will be guided through the essential notions of international criminal law.

The interactive and practice-oriented approach provides the best conditions to acquire knowledge and insight on the subject matter, while the inter-cultural dimension allows you to improve your appreciation of other peoples. Therefore, this summer seminar will greatly contribute to your development, by broadening your horizons and your understanding of the international legal system and also by opening the way to a possible career in the field.

The event is scheduled to take place 23-31 July 2011 in Sibiu, Romania. It will consist of a series of daily lectures and seminars, followed by a simulation of the International Criminal Court.

The Lectures will feature international specialists that will deliver presentations on different aspects of the matter and will engage in dialogues with the participants.

During the Seminars, the participants will be divided into groups and benefit from the expertise of our trainers. They will focus on the practical approach of the knowledge accumulated during the conferences and are designed to prepare the participants for the simulation of the ICC.

The Simulation of the International Criminal Court is a stage of the project that will stretch over several months.

After registration, the participants will be divided into teams of 3 and appointed as prosecutors, defense attorneys or judges. The teams will be comprised of students from different countries, in order to:

_facilitate inter-cultural exchanges;
_encourage dialogue;
_accustom the participants with international working environment.

Each group of 3 teams (prosecution, defense, judges) will be appointed a case, but all cases will have a common context.

Summer School in Holocaust Studies, Ohrid, 26 September-3 October 2011

Institute for Social and Humanities Research “Euro-Balkan”, Skopje, Republic of
Macedonia

announces

SUMMER SCHOOL IN HOLOCAUST STUDIES

"The Diverse Survival Strategies of Jewish and Roma Communities in Macedonia:
From Resistance to Memorialization"
-International Ohrid Summer University 2011-

With the support of

Task force for international cooperation on Holocaust education, remembrance and
research (ITF)
September 26th - October 3rd 2011, Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia

The central interest of the School is focused on opening up the discussion about
the memorialisation of the Holocaust experience in Macedonia, and in particular
focusing for the first time on Roma people as victims of genocidal violence, by
taking the Holocaust as an important factor in the formation of Macedonia’s
historic and socio-cultural past. The presence of the Jewish narrative in
Macedonia will be compared to the scarce but important data on Roma people among
other minority groups - victims of the Holocaust (homosexuals, disabled people,
etc.). By promoting the memorialisation of Jewish and Roma experiences in a
comparative perspective from the Macedonian context and their “strategies of
survival”, in this Summer School we take as a starting point an attempt to
further thematise and raise awareness of the systemic violence of the Holocaust
through inter-disciplinary academic discussion.
Namely, does the Holocaust create a so-called “place of absence”? To what extent
does the political affect of the unanswered “concept of the Holocaust” represent
“the chronotope of the silence”, which in turn hinders the continuous
articulation of the past at the given historic moment, by marking the then
historical presence as a paradigmatic vacuum-space of the continuity of the
spiritual and material biography and autobiography of the Holocaust narrative
for the future? How much and in what ways does such a historic fact allow for
the reconstruction of the past in the present day? Does political terror
signify a rupture in the functionality of the sacral and material aspects of
history, within the framework of one diachronic vertical, written not only by
the metaphor of terror, violence, vanishing, and forgetting, but also forever
sealed by the colonial aspect of death?
The discursive critical approach to Holocaust narratives maintains
multidisciplinary nature relating to social sciences and humanities and arts. On
the other hand, such a multidimensional approach to Holocaust discourse expands
this School’s primary filed of interest to affirm today’s serious methodological
need for the techniques of using Holocaust studies as to formulate the cultural
and historical picture in educational process about and of Macedonia and the
experience of the Holocaust in a broader geographical framework on the Balkans
and East and Central Europe.
The Summer School is integral part of Ohrid Summer University (OSU) which is an
academic program for young faculty, PhD candidates, postgraduates, researchers
and professionals, offering intensive, problem-oriented and research-based
courses from the domains of social sciences and humanities. OSU was founded in
1998 and has functioned continuously since then, as one of the core programs of
the “Euro-Balkan” Institute, involving a significant number of both junior and
senior members of academic communities from various countries all over the
world. To date “Euro-Balkan” Institute, trough its OSU program, has organized
more than 30 summer schools from various areas with over 500 participants,
involving over 100 proffessors. During the 12 years-long period of its
existence, OSU has engaged itself in: adequate and effective training of the
academic staff, demonstration of successful linkage of state-of-the-art
scholarship and effective and innovative teaching, promotion of academic
excellence and ability to facilitate creation and sustenance of active networks
of academics, as well as collaborative advancement of learning in certain
disciplines within the international context.
