Postdoctoral: Transitional Justice, Understanding the Age of Transitional Justice: Narratives in a Historical Perspective, NIOD, Amsterdam‏

“Understanding the Age of Transitional Justice: Narratives in a
Historical Perspective”

The general goal of the NIOD program on Transitional justice is to
contribute to understanding the impact and aftermath of mass
state-sponsored human rights violations on post-genocidal,
post-conflict, post-repressive societies. In pursuit of a
conceptualization of generic mechanisms and factors that influence
genocidal crimes and the subsequent transitional justice processes,
this program opts for the portal of the personal, the legal, and the
political narrative. It will examine the various phases and levels at
which testimonies, or narratives of events, play a role in influencing
the form of TJ undertaken by a given post-repressive society.

The levels may be distinguished as follows:
 The victims (the individuals telling their story)
 The institutions for the administration of Transitional Justice (the
narrative of judicial and extra-judicial authorities)
 The validators, or ‘form-givers’ – political elites, media, police,
and other relevant actors – who selectively frame the public debate
and impart the narratives and the use of narratives (produced in
trials, vetting procedures, truth commissions, NGO-sponsored oral
histories) with a particular political and social significance.

A dynamic multi-leveled approach that aims to reveal the interaction
between the testimonies, the formality of processing them, and the
developing political system should shed light on the individual,
psychological, social, and political impact/consequences of TJ
processes.

The NIOD has created a post-doc position in order to study the role,
impact, and significance of testimonies in transitional justice. We
are looking for proposals to develop key elements of the program,
resulting in a monograph. The qualified candidate will conduct a study
of transitional justice as a field and social phenomenon, or movement,
with a focus on key thematic, cross-cutting issues, and an emphasis on
(review and analyses of) approaches to reconciling conflicting
narratives. Other issues would include memory, truth, testimonies,
transitional justice tools and their impact, the beginning and
endpoints of TJ processes, victims and victimhood, perpetrators,
bystanders, and guilt.

Qualified candidates are invited to send a short proposal (max. 1000
words) on the research they propose to conduct within the framework of
the NIOD-TJ program.

The candidate will play a key role in the future development of the
NIOD-TJ program.

Job requirements
 Ph.D. in History, Law, or Social- and Political Sciences, or at
least three years professional (Ph.D. level) experience on topics
related to the program
 Can initiate challenging discussion about the specific area of
scientific interest and in general the research done at the NIOD
 Self-reliant
 Experience with modern information technology
 Professional attitude with excellent communication skills
 Fluent English
 Skilled in the development of proposals which could, via the
content, design, and execution fundamentally augment the Transitional
Justice program

Appointment
This is a fulltime position of 38 hours per week for a period of two
years at the NIOD.

We offer:
The NIOD offers an informal, internationally-oriented working
environment with a great deal of room for individual initiative and
responsibility. The maximum salary for a full-time position is €
4,970.00 per month gross (based on experience, scale 11 or 12,
collective labour agreement Dutch Universities), excluding 8% vacation
bonus and an 8.3% end-of-the-year bonus. There is an additional
extensive secondary benefits packet. Secondment is among the

Post-Doctoral Fellow, Globalization and Social Change, Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in Global Age, City University of New York‏

The Committee on Globalization and Social Change at the CUNY Graduate Center is pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowship search for the academic year 2011-2012. Applications are invited from scholars whose research coincides with our theme for the year, "Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in a Global Age."

The CGSC is an interdisciplinary working group of CUNY faculty committed to exploring the relationships among recent socioeconomic transformations associated with "globalization," the political possibilities opened or obstructed by those transformations, and the intellectual frameworks through which to grasp these developments and relations. Doing so requires that we revisit inherited analytic categories and explanatory frameworks from the standpoint of these new historical conditions. One such category is solidarity.

Research foci might be organized around (but are not limited to) the following questions: Now that the institutions and ideologies underpinning those traditions have been dismantled, does the category "solidarity" retain descriptive power or critical purchase? What might the relevant units or scale of solidarity today? Conversely, can a renewed conception of solidarity help us to grasp certain aspects of the contemporary situation? Do we need to conceptualize new forms or practices of (global) solidarity as part of a (global) political project that might be adequate to our current challenges? Can solidarity allow us to think creatively about coming together within or across social formations that transcends the limitations of inherited oppositions between universality and particularity, unity and fragmentation, general standards or shared norms and relativism? Could a concept or politics of solidarity point toward new ways of reconciling democracy and plurality? If so, what are the ethical implications of a renewed conception of solidarity in an age of global circulation and interdependence? Solidarity might also signal long-distance support for multiple struggles in different places. Does "globalization" require and enable, or perhaps foreclose, new types of networked linkages as well as the technical, organizational, and imaginative resources for pursuing them? How does the global visibility of citizens actions, most recently in the Arab world, inform the terms of politics solidarity?

In addition to conducting their own research, Fellows will be expected to attend and contribute to the weekly seminar of the Committee and support other initiatives of the Committee, such as the promotion of conferences, guest lectures and symposia. Postdoctoral awards are residential and normally run for the academic year September-May. In addition to the stipend and a research space, Fellows have access to all CUNY research facilities.

General Duties

Panel 2: Media & globalization: A critical analysis of a research construct

Panel 3: Journalism: Demarcating, transcending and subverting borders

This panel will explore the classical fields of journalism research, such as foreign correspondence, media ethics or the impact of technological innovations on journalistic work, and consider the reciprocal influences between "center" and "periphery" in them.

Panel 4: Media & development: Western claims and local needs

Media assistance is becoming increasingly important in international development efforts. This panel will feature a critical discussion of the theoretical foundations of the concept of media assistance, its relation to methodology and the empirical evaluation of its successes and failures.

Panel 5: Diaspora & media: The periphery as a dynamic center

This panel wishes to develop different approaches to assessing the role of media for diasporic communities and use them as resources for the expansion of Western and non-Western perspectives.

About Central European University (CEU)

Central European University (www.ceu.hu) is a graduate research-intensive university specializing primarily in the social sciences. It is located in Budapest, and accredited in the United States and Hungary. CEU's mission is to promote academic excellence, state-of-the-art research, and civic engagement, in order to contribute to the development of open societies in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and other emerging democracies throughout the world. About the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies

The Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (
http://cems.ceu.hu<http://cems.ceu.hu/>) promotes the study of the eastern Mediterranean and adjacent regions from antiquity, especially the Hellenistic oikoumene (323–30 BCE), to the end of the Ottoman period (1923).
The center perceives the Mediterranean as an ideal framework for the analysis of interconnections across geographical, chronological, imperial, religious and disciplinary boundaries, focusing on east-west interaction and exchanges, the movement of people, objects and ideas to and from the eastern Mediterranean, as well as imperial (dis)continuities through the Roman, Byzantine, medieval Islamic, and Ottoman eras.

CEMS currently has seventeen senior members affiliated with five CEU teaching units – the Departments of Philosophy, Medieval Studies, and History as well as the Jewish Studies Project and the recently established Source Language Teaching Group (SLTG) – and about twenty junior members among CEU's postgraduate research students.

In addition to various research projects conducted by individual senior and junior members the Center is currently engaged in a collective curriculum development project on `The Caucasus and Byzantium from Late Antiquity through the Middle Ages', involving colleagues from Armenia, Georgia and Turkey next to a group of international advisors (2011–2013).

2011 Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships

2011 Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships - European Commission
European Commission (EC) — Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships 2011
Study Subject:All areas of scientific and technological research that are of interest to the EU
Employer:European Commission
Level:Postdoctoral
Scholarship Description:Top-class researchers from Third Countries are welcome to work on projects in Europe. This helps to develop research cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world – to everybody’s benefit.
Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships are specially designed to encourage these moves.
Who can apply?
Researchers of any nationality active or recently active in Third Countries are eligible for an IIF. That means countries that are neither EU Member States nor Associated Countries. To apply, you must have either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years’ full-time equivalent research experience, after obtaining a degree permitting you to embark on a doctorate. But that is the minimum. The more experience you have, the better will be your chances of being accepted for this action.
Your application for an IIF should be made in liaison with the organisation or institution that would be willing to host you in Europe. Host organisations can be universities, research centres or companies.
What does the funding cover?
IIF funding is provided for a research project which will transfer knowledge into your host organisation and building or enhancing collaborations between Europe and the rest of the world. The research project will also allow you to advance your career. Financial support is provided for 12-24 months (full-time equivalent).
Funding allows you to:
* join a European research team that doesn’t have your experience
* establish a collaboration through a research project with your lab or your country
* gain new knowledge in a European lab.
Your IIF may also cover a return phase of up to one year. This will be spent back in your country of origin, applying the experience that you have gained. To qualify for a return phase, you must be from one of the International Cooperation Partner Countries. If you want a return phase, you must include details of it in your initial application. And you must specify the potential return host organization in your country of origin
Which topics can be funded?
All areas of scientific and technological research that are of interest to the EU may be eligible for IIF funding. But there is one exception: research areas covered by the EURATOM Treaty cannot be funded.
