Université Laval

 




Université Laval is Canada's oldest institution of higher education and North America's first to offer instruction in French. Located in the heart of Quebec's historic capital city, Université Laval is aqmong the top research institutions in Canada, having received in excess of $230 million in external funds in 2004. Université Laval traces its origins back to Séminaire de Québec founded in 1663 by Monseigneur François de Laval, the first bishop of New France. A Royal Charter creating the Université Laval was granted by Queen Victoria in 1852. In 1878, the Université Laval opened a second campus in Montreal that later became the Université de Montréal in 1920. Today, Laval offeres 350 undergraduate programs and counts among its alumni Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien.

Located in historic Québec City, known as one of the safest cities in Canada, Université Laval’s spacious campus is 56% wooded parkland, green space and athletic fields. The campus’ Botanical Garden boasts some 4,000 species of flowers and the wooded areas offer 67 species of deciduous and coniferous trees and over 60 species of birds. Many pedestrian paths and cycling routes are used by all students, and for the cold, winter months there are 10 kilometres of underground walkways linking all pavilions.
